No matter what the type of job the consensus is always the same. Take care of your employees and they will take care of you. Some businesses treat their employees like they are replaceable and worthless and don’t hesitate to let them go for small unimportant reasons. They feel like there are plenty of people out in the world looking for a job so it’s not worth it to try and hold onto people. This is faulty logic though. Constantly having to hire new employees is costly not to mention what it does to morale. A company is much better off taking care of it’s employees and holding onto them. Even if the job they have isn’t the most glamorous job in the world there are things that employers can do to help employees feel valued and important.

Good communication is probably the best way to keep employees happy and working hard. When people know what is expected of them they are more likely to perform well. They will be happier and have more determination to do a good job. Good communication eliminates the problems of misunderstandings and helps morale stay positive and upbeat. If this is a struggle for you it may be a good idea to take some time to read books like How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. This book will help you learn how to connect with people and keep them wanting to work for you. You can find a great deal on it at Amazon.

Spending time or money on your employees lets them know that you value them. It doesn’t have to be anything big or fancy to mean a lot to someone. Giving a little bit of what you have and making that small sacrifice lets people know that you care about them and feel like they are worth investing in. It is for this reason that companies do parties for holidays and birthdays. Although this costs the company money, sometimes a lot, it is worth it to the company to keep their employees happy. Sometimes even just buying small inexpensive gifts like those you can find at Walmart can go a long way to making someone feel good about themselves!

Do your best to pay your employees a fair wage. Sometimes even the best of bosses cannot be enough to keep an employee around if the pay is not enough. As time goes on inflation rises and the cost of living goes up. If wages do not go up eventually your employees will be at a place where they will have no choice but to find a higher paying job. Although they will appreciate the great employer that you were and the experience that you gave them this will put you in a place where you will be having to hire someone new and start over with your investment again. If your company is not able to give raises or pay very high the least you can do is communicate with your employees and explain to them why you are unable to pay more. You may get some understanding at least.

Sometimes people are just not good employees no matter how hard you to try to take care of them so these tips are not guaranteed to work for everyone. But even if this only works for one out of every five employees that one employee will make all your hard work worth it!
