Films
My own illustrated projects have been greatly enriched by a growing interest in film, photography and books. When a film “infects” me with a certain feeling or message I try to distil the response within a single image which portrays the common experience shared between myself, other viewers and the filmmakers themselves. Each piece serves as a testament to the strength of the film and the intimate, enduring relationship which developed throughout the process of conceiving and producing the illustration. It is my firm hope that in the future we will witness a reciprocal reacquaintance between illustration and film which is sadly lacking at present.
Shotgun Stories is a slow paced film about the inevitable and deteriorating cycle that results from stubborn pride and an unremitting preoccupation with vengeance.
Although quite sentimental 'Where the Wild Things Are' had moments of darkness combined with a spirit of childlike freedom and spontaneity that I appreciated.
THX 1138 was George Lucas' first feature film and is probably his finest. A combination of haunting sound effects and clean, sterile backdrops creates a surprisingly dark film.
One of the few vampire films I've enjoyed, 'Let The Right One In' combines the slow paced mood of Swedish cinema with a few well placed dark moments.
Killer of Sheep was a pleasant surprise that I discovered at a free screening. It's based in Los Angeles Watts which is shown as being a dusty, dry wasteland, where kids play freely, throwing stones at trains and each other.
